So, I am officially a homeowner. Yesterday, I closed on my condo. Today I woke up at 7:30, finished packing a few boxes, picked up the U-Haul, and with help from a couple friends, got it all over by 1:00. Then I spent 3 hours waiting for the cable guys to figure out where my lines were going to. The guy that lived here before had another set of cable jacks installed, and they figured they were extras. Turns out they were a replacement for the old jacks, of which those cables now just end abruptly somewhere in the wall.
I still have a few random things I need to grab, some dishes that were hiding in a cupboard and whatnot, but I have until Thursday to get all of that out.
Current state of condo = box-fill disaster area. First priority for tomorrow = set up desk so I can get my computer off the coffee table.Current Mood: exhausted

For your consideration.1
Fact 1: Between 2000 and 2005 average worker salaries in the U.S. fell 0.3%.
(sucky when you think about cost-of-living increases, but not too bad)
Fact 2: Between 2000 and 2005 average CEO salaries in the U.S. rose 85%.
(WTF)
Fact 3: Average CEO salary in the U.S. for 2005 was $10,982,000.
(*cries*)

Well, I did the finalist puzzles last night and I must say, I was pretty disappointed in myself. It took me over an hour and a half to finish them (I've heard reports of others finishing in ~15 mins). I suppose I shouldn't have started the puzzles at 11:30pm on a saturday night after 4 margaritas.
It was the damn dirt pushing puzzle. That one alone took at least as long as all the others combined. I hate those puzzles with a passion.
On the bright side, there are reports that you can change the combination on the cryptex to your liking and others have already modified theirs so that all five letters count, instead of just the last two as it's made now. This may be something I'll have to try, though I'll have to find some access to metalworking materials. |
|
So I did all the Da Vinci Code Quest puzzles (if you can call them puzzles) and got in under the 10,000 mark along with a co-worker of mine. We both received our cryptex today. Too cool.

I don't expect I'll win any of the really cool stuff, but it was worth it just for this. It's quite nice, actually. Weighs in at a substatial pound. There's definitely a lot of metal to it. Can't wait to get my email.Current Music: Foo Fighters - Have It All

| » New Chair! |
My butt is very happy.

Update: My butt is very unhappy after an evening in the chair. There is a seam I didn't notice before that is fine if you're slumping, but as soon as you sit up straight in the chair, it digs into your tailbone. Taking it back tomorrow. There was a chair on clearance I saw, about 25% less than this one. Think I'll get that instead. Not leather, but that is probably better (at least in the summer) anyway.

Most. Boring. Weekend. Ever.
At least it's not over yet. Tomorrow we get to celebrate my mom's birthday at Cheesecake Factory. Yay!
What did everyone else do this weekend. It seems like everyone else had plans.

| » Merry Christmas to me! |

I know you're not supposed to buy gifts for yourself, but these were a little over the limit for the gift swaps my extended family does and I asked for money from my parents because I didn't think of these when I had to tell them what I wanted.
And I SO wanted to get stuff done tonight....

| » Happy holidays... here's your yearly horror film! |
Has anyone else noticed that there has been a horror film released near Christmas the past few years?
Nov 29, 2002 - They Nov 21, 2003 - Gothica Nov 28, 2003 - The Missing (eh, maybe thriller, not horror) Nov 12, 2004 - Seed of Chucky Dec 24, 2004 - Darkness Dec 25, 2005 - Wolf Creek
Just seems like an odd time of the year to be releasing horror. Are they leftovers that couldn't be completed by Halloween? Though I don't really pay attention most of the time; maybe horror films are really a year-round thing. Thoughts?

As you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please feel free (but not obligated) to post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want, either good or bad.
When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.

So, I've never seen South Park on anything but Comedy Central until tonight. Tonight it aired on 38 the Spot and apparently will "five nights a week." The Spot is a local KC channel that's supposedly sister channel to NBC. I thought it was interesting that one of these channels would air a program like South Park, but it gets even better. I went to the website to check it out and found this:
"Initially focused on family oriented shows and classic programs, 38 the spot was the first station in the country to receive the coveted Parents Television Council (PTC) award for family friendly programming."
I guess it's okay to be hypocrites if it raises the ratings.
Disclaimer: I like South Park and I'm glad it's on other stations now.

Okay, so every time I read anything about airlines, I see something good about Jet Blue. They've got great fares, great service, they're on time. And now I see this emergency landing on the news. Did everyone else see this?
The front landing gear got twisted 90 degrees, so the tires are pointing left-right instead of toward the front. And this pilot puts the plane down as smooth a landing as I've ever seen. When he stopped he was dead center of the runway with his mangled front landing gear on the white stripe.
I am in awe. I hope that guy gets a medal or something. He deserves it.

It's sad that in the thick of a crisis the US government still lies to its citizens.
The Department of Homeland Security seems to specialize in it. It's too bad they're lousy at it.
